Windjammers 2 is another one of those games that I’m just glad exists in the first place. The original Windjammers came out in 1994 for the Neo Geo, with its sequel coming 28 years later to modern platforms. It’s always great to see classic games that are somewhat obscure and less obvious candidates for revival get brought back. Windjammers 2 was developed by Dotemu, a French company that specializes in remakes and new entries for classic franchises. They have developed and published games such as Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap, Streets of Rage 4, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge.
The gameplay of Windjammers 2 is simple to learn yet difficult to master. The game is a lot like Pong, where you move your character to throw a frisbee into the other side’s goal while defending your own. There is a whole host of playable characters with their own attributes, such as differing levels of speed and power. The goal is to score more points than your opponent by the end of each set, and win 2 out of 3 sets to win the round. The amount of points you score on a goal varies based on which goal you throw the frisbee into, with some being worth three points and other, more difficult to hit areas being worth five. In addition, failing to catch the frisbee as it falls awards points to your opponent. Being good at Windjammers takes a lot of awareness and quick reaction time, as you must make sure your character is in a good position on defense, set a path to intercept the incoming frisbee, and then score goals for yourself on the other end. Overall, the gameplay is very fast-paced and enjoyable. It’s a very good arcade experience that you can just pick up and play any time.
The other part of Windjammers 2 that I like is the new art style and attention to detail. While the original Windjammers had very high-quality pixel graphics due to the powerful Neo Geo hardware, Windjammers 2 has fully hand-drawn art and characters. This new art style looks great, and you can tell that a great deal of care was put into it. There are 13 total playable characters, from the six original characters from the first Windjammers to new additions and even secret characters. Each character also has their own special move that they can use once a meter is filled. These special moves can come in handy and really turn the tide of a match. There are also ten playable courts, with their own attributes such as the structure of the goal zones. These courts looking and playing differently from each other makes each one unique, and creates endless unique scenarios for matches.
In conclusion, Windjammers 2 has quickly become one of my favorite games to play and kill time with. The gameplay is addicting, and I’m always trying to hone my skills and get better at it. They perfectly translated the gameplay of the original Windjammers, while also making necessary changes and new additions. The graphics and overall presentation are also very well-done. I’d recommend Windjammers 2 to anyone who played and enjoyed the Neo Geo original, or is looking for a fun arcade game to pick up and play.
