One of the few JRPGs on the N64 (and easily the best), Paper Mario sets the standard for the legendary series to come, innovating in its gameplay with action commands in turn-based battles. The plot is relatively simple, with Bowser stealing the powerful Star Rod and kidnapping Princess Peach. Mario must free the seven Star Spirits to stop the invincible Bowser and save Peach. Other gameplay elements such as badges and Mario's different partners make an RPG experience that is somewhat in-depth, but very easy for most people to learn as they play. The graphics are very good by N64 standards, using a mix of 2D sprites and 3D models to create the game's paper world. The soundtrack is also phenomenal, with many catchy tracks such as Jade Jungle and Over Shiver Mountain, as well as atmospheric tracks like Shooting Star Summit. New bosses, locations, and characters expand the Mario lore in unique and interesting directions.
